India’s race to build world-class digital infrastructure is expanding beyond traditional technology hubs, with Visakhapatnam rapidly emerging as one of the country’s most ambitious destinations for artificial intelligence-driven data centres. Backed by large-scale investments and strong government support, the coastal city is preparing to host more than 6 GW of AI data centre capacity by 2030, a figure that exceeds four times India’s current operational capacity.
The transformation marks a significant shift for Visakhapatnam, long recognised for its ports, shipbuilding and heavy industries. Today, the city is positioning itself as a strategic digital infrastructure hub capable of serving hyperscale cloud providers, AI companies and global technology firms looking to expand in India.
According to industry reports, projects worth more than ₹6 lakh crore are already under development across the region. Major technology players, including Google, Reliance and Sify, have either announced investments or begun work on digital infrastructure projects that will support AI computing, cloud services and enterprise workloads. More than a dozen additional companies are also exploring investment opportunities in the city.
One of Visakhapatnam’s biggest advantages is its strategic coastal location. International submarine cable landing stations provide direct global internet connectivity, making the city highly attractive for hyperscale data centre operators. The availability of land, water resources and expanding power infrastructure further strengthens its position as demand for AI computing accelerates.
Artificial intelligence applications require significantly greater computing power than conventional cloud services. As organisations adopt generative AI, advanced analytics and machine learning, data centres must deliver higher power density, sophisticated cooling systems and resilient electricity networks. This has made infrastructure planning just as important as digital capability.
The Andhra Pradesh government has placed digital infrastructure at the centre of its long term economic strategy. Alongside data centres, the state is expanding renewable energy capacity, strengthening transmission networks and developing additional cable landing stations to support future growth. These investments aim to create an integrated ecosystem capable of attracting global technology companies seeking reliable and scalable infrastructure.
The development also reflects a broader national trend. India’s data centre pipeline has reached 8.33 GW across major markets, driven largely by AI adoption, cloud migration and increasing digital demand. Industry analysts believe this positions India among the world’s fastest growing digital infrastructure markets over the coming decade.
For infrastructure developers, the opportunity extends well beyond server facilities. AI campuses require advanced electrical systems, fibre connectivity, water management, renewable energy integration, industrial real estate and smart utility infrastructure. These requirements are creating new opportunities across engineering, construction and infrastructure services.
While the scale of investment promises significant economic benefits, experts also highlight the need for sustainable planning. Large AI data centres consume substantial amounts of electricity and water, making environmental management and renewable energy adoption essential for long term success. Policymakers will need to balance rapid digital expansion with responsible resource management to ensure resilient growth.
