Gaur Chowk Underpass Misses August 15 Deadline, Opening Now Targeted for Diwali

The much-awaited Gaur Chowk underpass in Greater Noida is unlikely to open on August 15 as originally planned, with authorities now looking at Diwali as the next target. The ₹92 crore project is being built to improve traffic movement at one of the busiest junctions in the Greater Noida West area.

The main civil structure of the underpass has been completed, marking an important step towards the project’s final delivery. However, several works are still pending before vehicles can start using the facility. These include bituminous surfacing of the carriageway, finishing work on approach roads, kerb work, road markings and installation of street lighting.

The delay comes at a time when Greater Noida West continues to see rapid residential development and growing traffic. As more housing projects become occupied, the pressure on major junctions and connecting roads has increased. Gaur Chowk has become an important point in the area’s road network, making the underpass significant for residents, daily commuters and people travelling towards Noida and other parts of the NCR.

The project is expected to improve traffic flow by allowing vehicles to pass through the junction with fewer interruptions. Better movement around Gaur Chowk could also improve access to surrounding residential areas and make daily travel easier for people living in Greater Noida West.

However, the revised timeline also highlights a familiar challenge in urban infrastructure: completing the main structure is only one part of delivering a project. Road surfacing, lighting, markings and approach roads are equally important before an infrastructure project can be opened for public use.

For Greater Noida West, the next few weeks will therefore be important. If the remaining works are completed on schedule, the underpass could be ready around Diwali and provide much-needed relief at the busy junction.

The project also underlines the wider infrastructure needs of Greater Noida West. The area has expanded rapidly over the past few years, with new housing developments bringing more residents and vehicles onto roads that were not originally designed for today’s traffic levels.

For residents, the focus now moves from the August 15 deadline to the revised Diwali target.
